Considering the poor health condition of people in the villages of Vadipati, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Sr. Teresina and Council felt the need of opening a small dispensary in this locality. On 16 June 1986 the sisters from Arulagam community started a part time dispensary. Just after one year on 7th May, 1987 it started functioning as a full time dispensary. Many poor people are benefiting by their service. Inflow of patients demanded more space and facilities. Through the benevolence of many generous hearts a hospital building was constructed. January 7th 1989 St. John’s health care centre was inaugurated. A community attached to the hospital was also started on March 23rd 1992. The hospital continued to grow with curative care, preventive and progressive health care reaching out to the surrounding fifteen villages with mobile dispensary and medical camps. At present this small dispensary has grown into a Health Care Centre
Social Work programs were started for empowering women. A Society is formed namely Baptistine Community Development Society (BCDS) under which many social work programs are undertaken for the betterment of poor villagers. A Home for the children of HIV infected parents is started and there are 30 children there. We continue to serve in the parish through teaching catechism, taking part in the choir, decoration and family visits. Thanks be to God!
